Summerwood neighbor Lone Star College ranks No. 1 in Texas for associate degrees

Congratulations to Summerwood’s smart neighbor, Lone Star College System, for being recognized as the top producer of associate degrees in Texas, and also ranking third among all community colleges in the nation.

Lone Star College-Atascocita Center, located only minutes away from Summerwood on West Lake Houston Parkway, is the newest stand-alone campus in the growing Lone Star College System.

LSCS ranked first among the 50 community colleges in Texas in the Top 100 Associate Degree Producers list, published this summer by Community College Week magazine.  LSCS awarded 4,208 associate degrees to students in the 2011-12 school year, a 27 percent increase over the previous year.

LSCS also ranked third among more than 1,100 community colleges in the nation. Of particular note, LSCS ranked fifth in the category of Nursing degrees awarded, and 12th in the Health Professions & Related Programs. LSCS ranked 10th in the Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Founded in 1973, LSCS is the largest institution of higher learning in the Houston area and the fastest-growing community college system in the nation, with a total enrollment of more than 90,000 students.

“Lone Star College-Atascocita Center makes a great addition to the educational opportunities available to Summerwood residents,” said Kayla Webb, marketing director for Newland Communities. “From infants to adults, residents have a world of great education within minutes of home, including our highly regarded Humble ISD schools onsite and nearby.”

Other Summerwood schools include Primrose School of Summerwood and Humble ISD’s Summerwood Elementary and Woodcreek Middle School, all located onsite in the wooded 1,500-acre community. Summer Creek High School is located just across the Sam Houston Tollway from Summerwood, and Lakeshore Elementary is only minutes away on West Lake Houston Parkway.
